Re: Need low-budget power amp for AL-III Plus's
Thanks Angelo, leaving well enough alone for now, but have taken some notes for future reference. It's taken me a while due to other commitments, but I've tried out the amp with different wiring configurations, figured out the pre-amp zone control, and sweated a little while learning the equipment (...

... and the verdict is ...
Bi-wire!!! Both Steve and I felt it was easier on the ear, and I got the fullness of base that was missing with current-only wiring. Ordered 4 strand wire last night (for under house) and will use some of the 2 strand I previously ordered to make patch cables (wall jacks to speakers) following this...

Re: Wiring a Sunfire 300x2
Not wanting to originally move them got me into linear thinking that more wire was the only solution. Just need to move them closer to the amp.
Never used to have mental paths like this, but middle-age is showing I guess.

Re: Wiring a Sunfire 300x2
OK, I've tried out using only current. Pretty, but not much base. Using only voltage, the base seems to override the ribbons, muddying the sound. So... I do now want to try bi-wiring current to ribbon, and voltage to woofer. I have enough wire to wire one speaker this way, and leave the other using ...

Woofer issue was just loose bus plates <g>.

Re: what to expect with a 2.0v rms difference
I'd plugged in numbers to those formulas and came up with the numbers. New formula (10:1) is easier. My Yamaha Rx-A1010 has output impedance of 1.2k, and the Sunfire input impedance 24k, so it looks like I'm twice what I need and "am golden"

Thanks Gary.
Re the manual: Not sure how input sensitivity alone would answer my question as to what to expect
. I did reference the manual (sensitivity etc), to input into the formulas in the article.

what to expect with a 2.0v rms difference
I stumbled on this article (http://www.audioholics.com/audio-amplifier/amplifier-voltage-gain) when looking for advice on setting the impedance on my pre-amp. I found the answer to that out elsewhere, but got curious about how my pre-amp and amp matched up. I followed the formulas and came up with t...

Re: Need low-budget power amp for AL-III Plus's
Due to a lot going on around here, we just got the Sunfire 300x2 hooked up for a trial run. Loved hearing each guitar string struck on 10000 Maniac's MTV Unplugged. My music-indifferent husband had a big-ass grin, and my toddler was dancing around being all happy and such! No sound from one of the A...

Re: Wiring a Sunfire 300x2
Thanks for the clarification. It must have been somewhere else I was reading that spoke of efficiency. The wiring is just stubs to the underside of the house, so I still need to buy 100' of wire even if using 2 stand. Regardless, I'm going to go ahead and complete the wiring and jacks for 2 strand, ...
