Suggested Cartridge

Post by TNRabbit » Sun Mar 31, 2013 8:33 pm

I bought one of these Stanton cartridges (previous version) back in the 80s from the BX when I was stationed in the UK. It listed for about $350 BACK THEN, but was on the clearance rack for $50. It was the best I've ever had. Check out this review:

This cartridge is the upgraded model of the classic 681-EE, which has been the standard since the early 1970's in the broadcast industry. I know this, because I've been in the business for almost 40 years, working for radio stations, here in New York City.

The Stanton 681-EEE boasts a very low tracking force (less than two grams), and a high output of better than 2.5 mV. Stereo separation is excellent, at 35dB+, when using an elliptical stylus. When properly grounded, there is no measurable hum.

My turntable is a classic Thorens model 125-AB Mark II, with a Shure "S" shaped tone arm. The cartridge shell had to be switched out for one that can accommodate my Stanton 681-EEE. The closest competition to this cartridge is the classic Shure "V-15 Type III Improved." Although the specs are similar, the tracking weight for the Shure cartridge is 2.5 grams or more. The lighter tracking weight of the Stanton 681-EEE puts less wear and tear on my record collection.

For the money, you can't buy a better turntable phono cartridge.

Quality Electronics has it for sale for $129.99 right now: http://www.qualityelectronicsdj.com/st681eeemkii.html

Even though I no longer do vinyl, those of you who would like an outstanding cartridge at a budget price should try this.

Carts are a WTF.
They mean more than wires, but down the line as to audio enjoyment for most who don't have a top level system.

Some guys who really like tunes and not only into "gear" have a second TT to play records just bought at a yard sale or some owned as a tyke. Those tend to be be scratched, but they might be favorite tunes.

You can't put them on the TT with your expensive cart.
No need to suffer if you have a second TT.
Put that record on and boogie !!!

Mine is a pristine Pioneer and it gets a lot of play.
