I've been playing CDs for so long that I'd forgotten just how great vinyl can sound. Most CDs don't have that warmth, depth and 3D soundstage that a really good turntable set up can have with an album.
I just got this hooked up - a Well Tempered Labs Classic turntable with an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge.
Here's a one word review:
WOW!
Thanks to the fellows on this forum who recommended this cartridge.
For those unfamiliar with this turntable, the motor is isolated in a cut out in the plynth and the platter and arm float in silicone fluid and the bearings appear to be polypropelene so there's no rumble whatsoever. It basically rides on goo.
Another unusual feature is that the arm pivots on a length of fishing line. Really a clever design.
A dust cover, hinge kit and record clamp are all that's left to complete this one.

Re: I'd forgotten how good vinyl is
Glad to hear you're enjoying it Steve - and the fun of discovery has just begun! My LP collection outstrips my CDs by almost 3 to 1 (~2100 LPs vs. ~750 CDs) and I'm surprised almost every time I spin a record. Enjoy!
Re: I'd forgotten how good vinyl is
That is one hell of a lot of albums - I never counted but think four or five hundred are here and almost all have been played twice at the most. Thought about selling them all every time I moved, that's for sure.
Thanks for the tip on the Ortofon from you and Obi - that's the ticket. Have to break it in, what horrible job.
One odd thing is they said to clean the stylus with a supplied brush dry as cleaning fluids containing isopropyl alcohol might delaminate the glue holding on the diamond. That would be an unpleasant surprise - kind of like discovering that the fellow who mounted the cartridge didn't even set the tracking force...

Bob Carver built a time machine and went back in time to stop the JFK assassination. As Oswald shot, Bob met all three bullets with sound waves from a subwoofer he built, deflecting them. JFK's head exploded out of sheer amazement.
