Loking to buy Original 30 inch ribbon replacement

Post by Edroom » Sat Dec 20, 2014 8:17 am

I have a pair of Original Amazings and one of the tweeter ribbons needs repair.
I am looking for one replacement or repair service.
also, is there any instruction for DIY repair on these?
I googled and found a fellow in Florida who repairs them for $275 but that is about double my budget,
any help appreciated,
Thanks,
Ed

You need to double your budget then Ed. It's the one and only reasonable option. Be glad to have the correct repair even possible.

If you look around here a little, you'll find out much more. Repaired, the Amazings are a really good speaker for the money. You just need real power to run them correctly.

James Sauter or 'Toymaker" on this forum is the only one that refurbs the Carver ribbons. He lives in Florida and if $275 to rebuild is out of your budget, look at ebay for a used one and test your luck.
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!

Greetings & Welcome Ed.

I understand the repair cost might be a little higher than you'd like, but be careful trying to find a 2nd hand replacement...
Pretty much all of the 30" ribbons are about 30 years old now.
Think of it like a water pump on a car... replace a dead pump with another 30 year old working pump...
It's really only a temporary fix.

No idea how much you have invested in your speakers so far, but even if you were to do a complete rebuild of all drivers and crossover parts, you'd still have a hard time finding another new set of speakers that will compare.

You are of course free to do as you please... but I suggest you don't try opening the ribbons on your own.
This usually causes more damage and problems, which in turn will just cost more in the end.

Best of luck,
James
