Sunfire Symphonic Reference Preamp

Post by trav0810 » Sun Nov 15, 2015 3:07 pm

I need some opinions on this pre. I have ZERO experience with Sunfire gear and I have an opportunity to do a trade which includes this preamp and a C9 unit.

Trav

In my humble opinion, its not one of Sunfire's best products.

I pretty well gathered that it was at the bottom end of their line. But didn't know if it had a following or what the value was.

I would think $600 shipped would be an absolute max value and the unit would have to be mint and complete with the remote, owner's manual and original box. A more typical price for these is around $350-$400 shipped.

They are OK-- If you compare them head to head with anything else made by Sunfire though they do not sound as good in my opinion. Bill Flannery at Flannery's Vintage Audio has warned me that both the amp and preamp are not serviceable. If they fail they are basically door stops. Hope this helps, good luck!

Bill said the same thing about my Vacuum Tube Preamp that Burned up a Cap, Sent it to Joe Chow of Audio Horizons and he was able to fix it for $275

Yeah, Bill has actually repaired a few Tube preamps recently with the help of Bob Carver. The problem with the failed power supply cap in the tube preamp is that it often leaks and burns through the board. If caught in time the repair is possible, if let go too long and it ruins the board.

The Symphonic line is totally different though from what I understand. The preamp is supposed to be a giant box of relays that could take hours and hours to sort through if one fails. At the price these typically sell for I think its just not cost effective to have someone (or at least Bill) do the repair.

As far as sale price goes on these, one just sold on eBay for $695 shipped and that was without the remote or anything. You just never know what you might get for something.
