600x2

So i hooked up my 600x2 to the bar system to see if i liked. Well i do, but then after an hour and a half i noticed one channel stopped, the amp was extra hot, and now the amp meter says four fifty instead of four eighty. Have not popped the cover yet although the meter has me bugged out. Another four hours until i can go home and check. The speakers are 2.2 ohm dc.

Never mind false alarm....no issue other than heat. Swapped out old dead bulb. All's good in audio land.

Re: 600x2

Yep, its sitting at Bill's now as I type this. :D Hopefully he'll get to it this weekend as he does have a few items in front of it. I guess Mr Carver is recovering from back surgery so don't know if I'll be able to get it signed or not (prayers for a speedy recovery! [-o< ) Bill is going to get a hold of him for me and see what kind of shape he's in. This unit is in near NEW condition, minus the signature on the face, one of the cleanest units I've seen.

Congrats on the second one. Bet you weren't pushing 2 ohm speakers either...

Not a problem. In my RedNeck bar have a basketball with a Larry Bird signature and a baseball with Mickey Mantle on it. Put both there myself.
Have Bob's sig on several items - can copy.

At live and enjoyable levels at that. If there was fans and more heatsink material, it would have not done that i think. I will find another pr2400 to replace the crown. If anything i respect the crown a little more now although it was obvious that the sunfire sounded better. i asked my son what do you think about the amp, he said it sounded better even though i was not pushing it. Jesse has another 600 huh, 19 i am sure or i would have most likely gotten a notice .... Jesse is a cool cat i say.

Best not to make an amp do something it's not intended to be used for... :-s

Re: 600x2

Angelo,

FWIW....I've had decent luck with QSC amps in several hour, high output situations. Not that I think they are not really crap. But in the same duty, I'd lost a couple of Crowns. One of the Crowns was 1kw, one 2kw. The QSC are cheaper and lower power numbers but have been surviving. Both the brands and models have quiet fans and full time pull air thru them.

Running speakers into outside situations swallows up sound and output is pretty high without realizing it. And in this duty, they run for several hours.

Re: 600x2

So i was jammin on the 35 with the al3s in the garage only to notice there s an issue in the left channel at higher volumes. It clips when the meters tag 250w and ok no issue at 125 or so. The top rail i guess. Another 35 for tom at vintage hifi to check out and fix for me.

Technically, they are not 2 ohm speakers. He stated 2.2 ohm D.C. Which means they are closer to ~4 ohm impedance. And that should not be a heat issue for the Sunfire's... 2 ohm impedance: perhaps and probably, but not for 4 ohm impedance speakers..which is what he was driving (IMO).

add: For example, my EPI 1000's are stated to be 8 ohm speakers.... But when I put an ohm meter to the terminals they measure out at ~4 ohms d.c. But that does not make them "4 ohm speakers" 'cause if you measure their impedance (vs frequency) you see a clear indication of impedance that is a lot higher than their 4 ohm d.c. measurement.

add#2: Another "for example": I drive my "sphere's" speakers with the Sunfire 300x2. They ALSO measure out at 2.2 ohms D.C. and no heat issues whatsoever with the 300x2 (it runs cool as a cucumber..albeit I rarely "open it up" that much). I've also measured the impedance of these speakers and I judge them (from looking at the impedance vs frequency) to be around 4 to 5 ohm impedance speakers.

add#3: And the basic "rule of thumb" that impedance is ~equal to 1.414 times d.c. resistance of the speaker applies to the TOTAL d.c. resistance (including from the tweeters whose contribution would only show up if/when you by-pass the x-over...otherwise you're just measuring the d.c. resistance of the woofers. My guess if angel were to temporarily do this, he'd get something around ~3 ohm d.c. total resistance (including from both the woofer AND tweeter "leg" of the circut) for the speaker and when this value is multiplied by sqrt of 2 (1.414), you get ~4 ohms impedance for these speakers. Not trying to beat a dead horse, just that whatever the 600x2 heating issue is here (if any), I would not blame it on the speakers and possibly would want look elsewhere, 'cause this issue likely won't go away simply by driving different (higher d.c. ohm) speakers....IMO!
