Classe CP-800

A friend of mine (Sasha) purchased a Classe CP-800 at Christmas ($5000.00)

Classe CP-800 is a Solid State PreAmp with a built in 24/192 DAC http://www.classeaudio.com/delta/delta-cp800.htm

Well Sasha has gone on vacation for a couple of weeks, and before he left he drop off his beloved CP-800 for me to play with.
So after using it for a couple days, this is what I think.

Fit and finish are beautiful, looks real nice Aluminum and Black. The remote is all Aluminum weighs about 1 1/2 lbs.
As the CP-800 does not have a phono board in it (Classe are working on that) and i'm to lazy to pull my AudioMat 1 from the basement system
All the tunes have been digital from 2 sources, Apple computer to Logitech Transporter and Raysonic CD-168, to Sunfire 600x2 as the Amp.

1st thing I notice, is the CP-800 has way better control over my sub much tighter Bass. I do not use my sub with the Sunfire Tube Pre
as I can not get it to sound right.
Playing 44Khz files, did not make me say WOW, the sound was nearly the same as my Sunfire Pre, using the built in DAC in the Transporter and Raysonic
other than more bass due to the sub for the 3K difference in price I would stay with my Sunfire Pre.
Now playing 96Khz files, thats where it all changed, The sound smoothed out a lot and I liked it. Gone was the precise note end, at 96Khz the notes had more
reverb and lingered in the air for a mili second, and it sound so much more natural so much more open.
The Raysonic and Logitech Transporter both play 96Khz files, but they do not sound the same as the CP-800. The CP-800 is the clear winner.

I have a few 192Khz files but no way of getting them to the CP-800 to try them out, Sasha runs cat 5 cable from his computer, and that would be so hard for
me to do as the computer and CP-800 are on different levels of the house and the Logitech Transporter is limited to 96Khz.

I have to give it him back after the July 1st long weekend, I might find time to remove my Audiomat Phono stage from the basement and try my Turntable.

Nice review! =D> I heard a Classe amplifier a few years ago that left me scratching my head, believe it was a CA-15? Nice equipment for sure, have fun with it!
