Re: Is the anyone that is missing anyparts to the carverfest

I was missing some stuff a while back.
James, Alex, Angelo, Tnrabbit, Harry, and Mouser got the rest of the parts to me.

Thanks again, guys!

I am, however, tempted to get the premium transformers from Edcor.
I wonder if there's a matching cover that they'll fit under....

Re: Is the anyone that is missing anyparts to the carverfest

Hi Martin,

Good to know you're still kickin'. Where you been since CF?

If you're referring to installing some of the "full size" big iron from Edcor, forget it. First, it won't fit on the chassis. Second, it's not needed. Good iron for the EL84 is the Dynaco iron for the ST35 anyway. It'll cost you about what two of the amps cost us probably.

If you're thinking of that round of "testing" and a distorted 20hz waveform the deal is you don't ever expect OT to be capable of full power output down to 20. If you design iron for that much output that low, then you've sizeably sacrificed the high end. And music doesn't have that much output at those freq's anyway. Look at specs for most iron and you'll note they often list specs for bandwidth at 1 watt. And/or they go to 30hz or some other number. There is a reason for that. It's not a new thing that OT design is a balancing act.

Now, that's not to say that either version of the iron that was there that day is killer for low end in a testing situation. It is small core, it is going to start to give it up on the low end as you increase power. Absolutely. ALL OT do! The question is how does it sound when you're playing music? All the results in the real world, whether it's us folks from the unwashed masses or the magazine tests, agree that the amp sounds very nice. That is the magic of the designer. Balancing the trade offs to achieve the desired result.

We got one hell of a good little amp for the dollar we put in! If you want to fool yourself into thinking you're listening to high quality sound at 18 thousand watts (as some do), then this might not be the right amp for the job. ](*,) What a greedy fool trying to exploit the name of one incredibly nice gentleman!

Ok...back to the regularly scheduled program. Nice of you to be asking the original question Angelo! That was a crazy few days that year. I still think we all owe Bob all kinds of gratitude. And I'm glad the community was able to help tie up some of those loose ends which were bound to come up from all of it. Bob planted a seed....where and what will it grow into?

Mark, can I have your permission to post your comments on Basspig's Facebook page & thecarversite.com in response to his allegations?

Re: Is the anyone that is missing anyparts to the carverfest

Gary,

I have no desire to stir things up. I just think people here should know the score. The lib site folks have already decided these things are shit. That's too bad, their loss, their missing out on the fine playback experience if they believe and can't sort out the difference between the bench and life.

The thing is, he likely knows his test was a distortion of distortion. His agenda is clear. You can't blame somebody for wanting to put food on the table. I find it comes in handy once in a while too. But to do it at Bob's expense, just isn't right.

I said I was going to leave it alone, I don't need to spend anytime with elevated blood pressure over somebody else. But Martin is a friend and I just wanted to help him remember that these are nice little amps, no matter what somebody else is spreading around.

We should be enjoying our audio, not squabbling about things. It's easy to take technical things and misapply them. Just because a hatchback will open and you could put it there, I'd still suggest a truck to haul a load of gravel.

Hope you're doing good Gary and I sure missed you making it down this year!

Angelo, I'm missing the larger of the EIC plug modules. If you have one of those I'd like to acquire one.

Mark, your comments are SO much more eloquent than mine are.
