Just Bought 490t CD Player- Help!

Post by Texas42 » Sat Jul 24, 2010 8:48 pm

Just bought one, looked like it was in good shape. Bought it with a bunch of gear (Audio Research Classic 60 and AR LSI, Klipsch Chorus, etc) but the Carver drawer won't open. The unit turns on and there is a timer that counts down (I assume to let the tubes warm up) but the drawer just makes sound but doesn't open. I did a search on the forum and other areas and it seems it was a common problem to this unit but I don't see a fix. Is it a broken belt? If so, is there a replacement available? If not, is there some other common fix for this? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I took off the top and it does look like the belt has dried up and fallen apart. Anyone know where to get replacement belts? Also, it looks like this will be a difficult area to get to (perhaps from the bottom would be easier?). Thanks in advance for any tips.

the belt is slipping, looky here....

drawer catch tab

other drawer catch tab, these are plastic, be careful these can break
when the drawer is open you will see that the tray hits these, bend the tab a bit and the tray will slide out, this lets you get the the belt.

when you get a new belt, pop the top, it takes 5 mins to change

So you push the tabs in and 'force' (lightly push) the drawer open? Does it matter if the unit is plugged in for this (as I'm guessing this is open manually)?

no I had it unplugged and spun the motor by hand, yes just lightly push the catch to the side.

Thanks for the informative pics! I got the tray out successfully without incident. Now, where is the best place to get a replacement belt?

Cool beans! I'll give them a try. Any other things I need to check after the belt goes in? Does the drawer need to be lubricated before I put it back in? And, if so, what is the best type of lubricant or grease? Sorry for all the questions but want to do it right.

Well, 4 Walmarts later and still no belts. These seem to be elusive little things... :x

Something else to try I see no one has mentioned. Always leave CD in tray and door will open? I don't own one of these, but this is what I have heard, I would try it until you can repair.

Well, found the belts and got the drawer to open and close but now I'm still not getting any sound. Fortunately, there is a Carver authorized repair center in San Antonio so off it will go to them to figure out. Hopefully, this is a unit worth saving and investing in, even if I don't end up keeping it. Thanks to all for their inputs!

Yes, both tubes are in it and both are glowing so I assume they are working.
