Al3 dos and donts?

Post by Txorexch » Mon Sep 17, 2012 4:51 pm

Hi all. I got these al3s used recently. Also have a tfm 55. Don't know anything about them but want to use it.
I still don't have a working receiver so hooked a eq and then ran my iPhone through that to the speakers. I noticed lots of burning type smells and the sides of the amp very hot, the back panel of the right channel speaker very hot. Am I doing something wrong or is the gear having an issue. Opened the back of the speakers, good foam, and none of the individual parts seemed very hot but all warm and smelling like burning. I want to use these speakers and build a neophyte system.
Thanks for your advice

Use that iPhone to take some pictures of how you have everything connected....something is wrong!!! Don't run it again until we get this straightened out! What kind of eq?

Lots of pics will help~

YES...open your response and go to the bottom of the page where it says upload attachment...select the pic from where you have stored on your computer, open it, place inline and viola! I agree with Rabbit...don't do anything till we look at what ya got!
In reality, it only matters what it sounds like to YOU!!!

I cannot get pics on.
Have realistic equalizer. iPhone plugged into a y cable to the r and l inputs on eq. From eq to tfm55x inputs. Then have two sets speaker wires twisted together for each red and white post going to the back of speakers. The top and bottom speaker posts have a gold jumper installed across them.

Full volume from the phone. Sounds great slight buzz in left spur wedged some tissue lightly against ribbon seemed to stop it 90 percent. Some particular sounds bring out the bussing but with rock it's not noticeable.

Full volume??? wtf

You paid $70 for ALL that???

That wouldn't even pay the TAXES on what it's worth...

The tissue trick is not the way to solve this. Is there any noticeable issue with the ribbon in that spot?

Did you try tightening the screws like I said?

Yes tightened screws scared to go tighter. When the speaker plays one ribbon has waves and buzz. Also tried hair dryer. FYI its in my garage 90 plus degrees in fl. Not sure if that effects it. Yep 70 bucks. \:D/

Humidity DOES play a factor...
