OO

Post by OconeeOrange » Sat May 07, 2016 3:23 pm

Yep, drinking again on the porch.
Last year at 69 I was 210 pounds of happy beer fat. I decided to give myself a year to get in shape to run a foot race when I hit hit 70. I showed up for that race today. I stunk up the place as my hamstring was ripped, and I had to walk.

No matter, I can see I can do better than my peers. I can beat them all, and I will. I drink beer and they mostly don't. They can't run with me.

Now I am on the porch in pain with cold beer and a BOB Carver amp making waves on the lake. Will the cops show?

I started out a year ago walking to my mailbox and back 10 times.
This Summer I will be a competitor on the foot race circuit. I believe I can challenge the state record this Fall.

Anyone can improve.

OO,
You always need goals. Diet and exercise are great goals. I was doing good. No sugar or junk carbs. Then I had a little bit of ice cream and I fell off the wagon. Been gaining all winter.

BTW in shape at 70 has been done. Dr. Jeffry Life. An inspiration to all of us old codgers.

Bill-
Glad to hear you have rekindled your passion for running again. Also, sorry to hear about the injury. After 40, it's all about figuring out how far you can push yourself before something in your body snaps. You taught me that.

After years of half-assed attempts at running, I decided that 2016 would be the year that I'd run as much as I can. On this 128th day of the year, Garmin Connect tells me I've run 127 times over a total of about 280 miles. The hardest part, as you know, is forcing yourself to slow down. Currently in a period of 'feeling an injury coming on' and holding back until the warning signs fade away enough to pick up the pace again.

Get yourself healed up between now and September, I'd enjoy running a few miles with a real 'masters runner' while I'm u that way, if you'll have me.

Glad to see you acknowledge an injury coming on. I wish I could get my runner to do that. She keeps running into injury. She's a sub 5 minute miler.......I need 100RWHP to do that

Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

Bill: That was a heck of a read. Thanks for posting it. One thing that is striking is that you train very carefully and gradually - exactly what you've always advised. In April 2015, you're at 15+ min/mile and by November, you're seeing 9s and 10s. Wonderful! But then, there's a gap in your reporting times and suddenly, you're racing in the 7s. What the heck, man? Lost patience? Or is it normal to ramp up the training for the last couple of months before a goal race?

Here's my GC if you're interested. Basically no real plan to any of it.

Just running every day unless something comes up. The thing with daily runs seems to be that additional miles = overuse pains = back off on the miles and pace. Seems to self-limit to 2 mile daily runs. 7s and 8s on good days, 9s and 10s on bad ones. Absurd 45 resting hr down from around 70 in Jan.

Ray: You must be so proud of your daughter. Can't even imagine seeing a 4:something mile pace. That is just so crazy fast!
