I was listening to my surround setup in the basement for music and for years I knew it didnt sound right. Although it sounded great for movies it just doesnt sound right for music. I saw a ad on craigslist for some Infinity Kappa 8.1s. These were speakers that I had dreamed of owning when I was younger but did not have 2000 dollars to spend on stereo equipment at the time. Fast forward to 2014 and the speakers were about the quarter of the price new. I could afford them now. I struck a deal with the guy and brought them home. They were in excellent condition with all original foam, woofers , mid range and tweeters. I had a old school Sansui receiver that I hooked up to it at first but the channels had some really bad static. I knew I couldnt run it like that so I used my trusty JVC surround receiver from the early 90s. It has 100 watts a channel and sounded pretty good but doing some research online I didnt realize that these speakers need some real power. I remember the guy I bought the speakers from said he had a Carver amp he could sell me. My choice was either a tfm-25 or M1.5 T. I remember I liked the Carver amps back in the day and liked the ones with the meters on them. So I purchased it without a pre amp and had to wait to see which one I would get. I eventually went with a Parasound P5 pre which works well for my needs and sounds very good with the Tfm-25. Wow those 8.1s came alive. I was cranking it up so loud my neighbor came over to tell me to keep it down a bit. Upon doing some research on the 1.5t amp I didnt realize it had more power. So I went back and purchased that one as well. With 380 watts a side I realized this is how the speakers are suppose to sound. Everything had more authority. The midrange and vocals were in your face. Unfortunatly the 1.5 has the typical hum and static with the age and will have to be rebuilt. The guy I bought it from gave me a small refund for my trouble which I thought was cool. So I had the tfm-25 hooked up for now and recently came across a decent deal on ebay for a second tfm-25 that had 8 resistors replaced, relays, and bulbs with receipt. When it arrived Saturday I hooked it up and it sounds a little bit more crisp and detailed compared to my original one. A friend of mine came over and was so impressed with the sound he wanted to buy one of my spare tfms for his SVS speakers. I said no way but we can start looking for one for you. lol. The store I bought the pre amp also had used gear so I saw a mint condition HR-752 on the shelf and bought it also for the bedroom. That is connected to a JVC cd player and Infinity reference 3 speakers. Ive been chasing a couple of TFM-45 and 55 here and there so I know I have the sickness now. Sorry for the long story.
