Carver A400X

Post by kingman » Tue Feb 10, 2009 7:20 pm

Think I just stole a 400X off fleabay. Anyone had experience with this amp? Says 200/channel at 8 ohms. It was the LAST thing I needed, but thought it was a good buy and may re sell. Paid $89 with owners manuel.

Nice snag. I have an A-500x that's a bit strident on the highs, but a great bass amp.

The A-400x is sort of the spiritual successor to the TFM-25 wheras the A-500x would be the spiritual and more direct successor to the TFM-35x.

SPECS: (Power output) 200watts per channel into 8ohms; 300watts per channel into 4ohms; Bridged mono operation - 600watts into 8ohms, all at 20Hz to 20kHz, nmt 0.2% THD --- (Dynamic Headroom) 2.0dB @ 8ohms; 2.5dB @ 4ohms --- (Freq Response) 20Hz to 20kHz (+0,-0.25dB) --- (Crosstalk) >70dB @ 1kHz --- (Damping Factor) >150 (@ 1kHz into 8ohms) --- (Input Impedence) 47kOhms --- (Sensitivity) 1.41V rms for rated power into 8ohms @ 1kHz (±0.5dB); 100mV for 1W into 8ohms (±0.5dB) --- (Gain) 29.0dB (±0.5dB) --- (Input-to-Output Phase) 0° (±10°) --- (IM Distortion) <0.03% --- (THD) <0.2% --- (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) >115dB (A-weighted, referenced to rated power); >91dBW (A-weighted, referenced to 1W) --- (Slew Rate) >10V/µS

The A-500X one upped the A-400x by offering an additional 50WPC into 8 ohms but also up to 750WPC into 2 ohm loads

Wow great price!! Is this going to be an addition or replacing another amp?

I hadn't noticed the price you paid Kingman. It would have been a bargain at twice that price! Way to start off an OCCD stint!

re:Wow great price!! Is this going to be an addition or replacing another amp? Naw! Just another OCCD hiccup! Can't seem to turn down a deal. Gonna play around with it, maybe use to drive my sub. Anyone out there using one in their system?

Yeah, the A-500x has a bunch of parallel output devices. That A-400x @ $89 is the best deal I've seen in a long time. You should be able to re-sell it for at least $200.

That's a great buy for just about any kind of electronics. Have to say, I'd never heard of the A400X amplifier. I'm quite familiar with the A series amps, as I own two A760X's and a 220 for rear surround. These amps are really in a league of their own, for solid bass. I really wouldn't describe the high frequencies as strident, but rather very accurate playback of what's being fed into them, albeit at much higher levels. If it's on the recording, your going to hear it. Good luck enjoying your recent acquisition.
