ECC83 tubes are 12AX7's. You can also use 5751's but they have lower gain. There are tons of 12AX7's to choose from. As always it will come down to your sonic taste. My prefered tube in this family is the GE 5751 triple mica with black plates. The close second for me is the Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7. Another nice tube is the RCA 12AX7 long black plates. I always run the RCA's with tube dampers because the long plates can be more microphonic than other tubes. I think T3 likes Ei tubes. Mullard also makes some nice tubes. I ran some Amperex 12AX7's but they didn't work well in my system so I sent them to Chauss and he liked them in his system.

I started a thread about that awhile back. I think I asked about the Black Sable tubes. I don't think I ever got a response.

I have access to cryo treating and might just try a cheap set of tubes like some Jan Phillips and see if I can tell a difference. Maybe send them to you and a couple other forum members and see what you/they think?

Sounds like fun to me! Let's see how it works if we hear a difference I have a few Bugle Boys we can sacrifice to the cryo chamber.

Speaking of bugle boys, I showed my 9yr old girl one of the tubes and she thought it was "cool". I went to a meeting at church and when I came home she showed me this.

Well I was talking about vacuum tubes with my mechanic and he told me he would bring the microphone amp over that I gave him...I dont remember giving him a microphone amp...lol Come to find out, it came from my church a few years back when they "upgraded" to solid state. Anyway to make a long story short it had a pair of Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7's in it Lets just say they sound awesome in the phono preamp...I may be liking these a little better than thr 5751's.

Wow that's great!!!! Right now I'm trying out some borrowed Sylvania black plate gold label triple mica 5751's. Haven't.listened to them at length yet but my initial impression is they sound great and at least equal to the GE tubes I use. Since I changed power cables on my amp the sound change was significant enough that I will try the Telefunkens again. I want to get some ribbed plate Telefunkens because I hear they are a little warmer.

It also had a pair of ACN Sylvania 1f 12AX7a 7025's in it, Made in USA. I have not listened to them long enough to really form an opinion one way or the other. I have found a little info on the 7025 version of a 12AX7. Its supposedly for industrial application and has low microphonics.

MRHP - keep an eye out on eBay- there are a lot of Fisher tubes that were made by TFN that can be had for much less $'s.
The TFN's seem to produce a much wider sound stage than other 12AX-7's I have tried. Have FUN rollin!
